With a story to tell and a front row seat to the ocean, Maranui Cafe really has risen from the ashes and continues to impress. Maranui sits on the top story of the Maranui Surf Club overlooking sizzling beach days and wild southerly changes. The building and has been through a lot after becoming a charcoal skeleton during a fire a few years ago. Maranui's team rose to the challenge creating Queen Sally's Diamond Deli to quench the locals hunger (around the corner on Queen's Drive), and in the meantime fixing and rebuilding Maranui Cafe. As you navigate up the narrow staircase take a moment to look at the photos which give you a glimpse into Maranui's story. There are black and white photos of old school surf lifesaving spunk's as well as images of the fire's damage. Once you have seen the pictures you will realise what a huge accomplishment the team here have done to recreate the vibrant and happening cafe again.

Beware on the weekend or holidays you will most likely have to queue up which can take some time. But if you are visiting midweek or willing to wait, get ready for wholesome, seasonal food with a view. The cabinet is always filled with sweet treats, and the best savoury muffins in town. If you are heading for brunch or lunch I highly recommend the Breaker Bay Burrito, zingy chorizo with spiced organic baked beans, avocado and tomato salsa ($17.50). But be in quick this bite is only available until 11.30am. The cafe also does great Havana coffee and flavoursome smoothies, and if you're feeling like something a little stronger, Maranui is also licensed. The Surfers Sauvignon Blanc ($7) is delicious, dangerous and covered in salt spray. The perfect start or end to a beach day.
